Texto de Aulo Gelio encontrado en Rayuela (capítulo 148): De la etimología que da Gabio Basso a la palabra persona. Sabia e ingeniosa explicación, a fe mía, la de Gabio Basso, en su tratado Del origen de los vocablos , de la palabra persona, máscara. Cree que este vocablo toma origen del verbo personare, retener. He aquí cómo explica su opinión: «No teniendo la máscara que cubre por completo el rostro más que una abertura en el sitio de la boca, la voz, en vez de derramarse en todas direcciones, se estrecha para escapar por una sola salida, y adquiere por ello sonido más penetrante y fuerte. Así, pues, porque la máscara hace la voz humana más sonora y vibrante, se le ha dado el nombre de persona, y por consecuencia de la forma de esta palabra, es larga la letra o en ella».
